Naarm/Melbourne artist Tilly Vickers Willis returns with a film-noir-esque second single Silver Halide Film, alongside the announcement of a Japan Tour this August. To celebrate the release, the singer/songwriter has curated an exclusive playlist for MILKY full of pacey, mysterious songs that set her creative mind alight.
"Circuit describes love as a conversation in constant motion; an endless back and forth," the singer shares. "The whimsical, spiral-like piano and unwinding lyrical verse attempt to capture the peculiar resonance of true connection.
She adds, of the songs visual, "I wanted the video to be direct and poignant”. The warped, superimposed video style which centres different voyeurs plays upon the song’s exploration of giving and receiving as lifeforce, echoing the opening lyrics"
LE TEMPS DE L’AMOUR - FRANCOIS HARDY
Ye-ye (60s French pop music) was a big influence to writing and recording Silver Halide Film - particularly this song. The simplicity of the arrangement and directness of Francois’ words is what I have always come back to.
UNDER A RAINBOW - SFJ & ELLE MUSA
Everything SFJ (London-based drummer) and Elle Musa (Australian musician and painter) have collaborated on has resonated deeply with me. This song is playful and mysterious and captures a very specific feeling that you’ve just gotten away with a crime.
MELODY EXPERIMENT - BLONDE REDHEAD
The album Sit Down for Dinner by Blonde Redhead has raised me (from age 24 to 25). It makes me miss a life I’ve never had, somewhere in New York City.
LOVE ENEMY - SKELETEN
Skeleten is an Eora/Sydney based artist, I feel like I could play this song forever. The bassline + drums + voice is just right!
REDEEMER - KAREN O AND DANGERMOUSE
When I first heard Lux Prima I had to pull over into an illegal park and listen. This album was on high rotation riding to the studio to make Silver Halide Film.
THE WAY YOU MAKE LOVE - GENA ROSE BRUCE
I saw Gena Rose Bruce (Naarm/Melbourne artist) play recently in Northcote and was blown away. Similar to Love Enemy, it feels like an electronic song with real human instruments. It’s also just so effortlessly sexy and we always need more of that energy in winter.
SEASON’S TREES FT. NORA JONES - DANGERMOUSE, DANIEL LUPPI, NORAH JONES
This album Rome (which is a soundtrack) was incredibly influential in the studio, with its mood, instrumentation, arrangements and genre (or mix of genre). There are also very few choruses on this album which makes me feel seen as a songwriter.
TOM’S DINER 7” VERSION - SUZANNE VEGA, DNA
Everyone knows this iconic song from 1990. I have always loved it, but in making Silver Halide Film I was drawn back to it. Something about the repetition of the melody and the way the scene is slowly revealed. This video of Suzanne talking about the song being made, originally misunderstood, and later reinterpreted in a remix is so brilliant.
NOT COOL LIKE NY / NOT COOL LIKE LA (GEOFFREY O’CONNOR REMIX) - SARAH MARY CHADWICK
Sarah Mary Chadwick is a Naarm-based songwriter, whose solo work is known for its confessional style, either just piano and voice, or with sparse arrangements. This remix by Geoffrey O’Connor re-interprets her genius writing + unique phrasing in an interesting way - and I have obsession.
FROM THE PREVIOUS WORLD - ENIWA RINKO
Eniwa Rinko is an artist based in Fukuoka, Japan. Using guitar, looper, and Casiotone, her music feels personal, dreamlike and touches a protected part of the soul. This song From the Previous World does just that. She is a really special artist.
