Eora/Sydney-based hip-hop artist Ike(from)Pluto is back with his new single, Belco's Finest. To celebrate the release, the musician has curated an exclusive playlist for MILKY.
"Belco's Finest is my reintroduction to the world as an artist after taking 18 months off from releasing music. I've used this record to champion my hometown, Belconnen, as I'm proud to represent Canberra's cultural capital and the people in it. My goal was to serve a punchy yet colourful taste of Belconnen's charms," the musician shares.
WHERE WILL I GO - BRIEF ENCOUNTER
I happened upon this joint while YouTube ‘crate digging’. Everything about this
record is perfect, the sexy guitar chords, the lazy drums, the falsetto lead vocals… I
could go on forever, but I haven’t enjoyed a piece of art as much as this in years. No
wonder it’s the sample that brought about Belco’s Finest.
SHELL - KENNY MASON
Kenny gotta be one of the coldest niggas in the game right now. I love that he knows
how to get off-loaded bars but still let the beat breathe. The backdrop is masterful
sampling of a 70’s soul record and bouncy trap drums that create JUST enough
tension to make you lean in and fully internalise every bar Kenny spits.
FREAKYT – TIACORINE
RAHHHHHH, what can I even say!? TiaCorine probably has the most creative cadence
selection I’ve heard since Tierra Whack blew up. The whole track is spinning from
start to finish, made to play in the whip or when you’re ten toes in your local,
elevating your presence from existing to winning. And of course, the joint is only a
touch over 2 minutes chef’s kiss.
MISTER MISFIT BUT AIN'T MISSED A FIT IN MONTHS – SMINO
Most repeatable line of the year, you can’t tell me nothing different! I’ve found
myself spontaneously blurting out ‘mr misfit but ain’t missed a fit in months’ on
almost a daily basis and then I start dancing and I HAVE to play the track. Smino
came through with the Energizer Bunny on this one. BATTERY IN MY BACK, CAN’T
HOLD THE BOY BACK!
4 YOUR EYEZ - ABEL TAKAN
Stumbled across this one only last weekend. I don’t know anything about the artist at
all, but I love well-executed interludes, and this is that and so much more. This is
meditation in hip hop form; it clears my head and sets me up to have artistic
epiphany.
IF YOU THINK YOU’RE LONELY NOW - BOBBY WOMACK
Mr. Womack pulling the heartstrings like a damn fishing line…reeling us all the way
in! I’ve got this banger on too many playlists to count and every time it comes on, I
just need to go running home to my wife (to be) and confess my love to her all over
again. This is a hopeless romantic, manifest!
KARMA - SIR FEAT. ISAIAH RASHAD
HE CAN’T MISS! Self-awareness is the name of Sir’s game and he’s the MVP of it. Yet
Again, he’s delivered a record that helps me ground myself as well as mellow out and appreciate the constant journey of growing and evolving as a human being. The
feature from Zaywop is for the vibers as always and rounds this piece out to a full
360. 10 out of 10.
VENETIAN ROSE - A$AP TWELVYY FEAT. JAY WORTHY
Head bopping like a Cadillac convertible from start to finish. The first half of the
record has Twelvyy and Worthy letting us know they’re ‘Them Dudes’, before the
midway beat switch where A$AP’s most underrated member delivers an
introspective journal entry like verse that presents the duality of thug, never skipping
a beat along the way.
BLOOD - SEAN LEON
Sean Leon is probably the most slept-on sonic genius of this era. As one of the
masterminds behind Kanye’s Donda, Jesus Is King and Ye, all it takes is one listen to
his work to see exactly what he contributed and how significant he was to some of
those project’s best moments. ‘BLOOD’ makes me want to cry at myself and then
experience rebirth. It’s all about the soundscape on this one, it can transcend you to
places you didn’t know your soul had.
TOO MANY TEARS - DURAND JONES AND THE INDICATIONS
If this group were 45 years older, they would be one of the most prolific soul bands
in human history. Regardless of that, I’m hella grateful that I can enjoy NEW music
that captures that era’s essence. This one has a kind of Caribbean influence that
reminds me of Slim Smith but I think the bass line keeps it locked into the soul lane,
but you could definitely hit a slow whine to it stIll.
BITTER TASTE - DYLAN ATLANTIS
My favourite artist in the country…THE DYLAN ATLANTIS! I could’ve drawn a song out
of a hat when it comes to their catalogue, and it would be my favourite song every
time. I decided on BITTER TASTE because it’s a bit underappreciated. The level of
emotion that Dylan musters vocally is unmatched. The way they convey their feelings
is so potent that when I listen, I breach empathy and start to think the emotions are
my own, it’s crazy.
