Adelaide’s Haliday recently shared his new single, Head Rest, teaming up with Teenage Joans drummer and vocalist Tahlia Borg. To celebrate the release, the musician has curated a playlist exclusively for MILKY, packed with his favourite nostalgic punk tracks.
“You aren’t thinking rationally anymore, and you just need to go to bed and get some sleep rather than staying up and ultimately end up making poor decisions. Aston wanted to hang out one night and write fast, careless pop punk, so we met up at the rehearsal space we have been going to since we were 16 and did just that!” Haliday shares of the song.
BOX CAR RACER: ALL SYSTEMS GO
I think this song is actually one of the main factors that lead to the creation of Haliday! I was just so keen to cover this song and my band at the time wasn’t really suited for it, so Aston and I thought if I started a new punk project we’d finally be able to play it. I think I’ve played it so many times that people think it’s one of my originals (especially younger audiences).
YOU ME AT SIX: UNDERDOG
I had this song on back-to-back repeat for about two months in High School and I still can’t get enough. It’s so short but I think the energy in such a short song length is what makes you wanna play it over and over.
TAKING BACK SUNDAY: MAKEDAMNSURE
This is my “lose ya voice screaming to this in the car” song, it just gets me so amped! I think this track taught 16 year old me how to harness that angst in my voice.
BASEMENT: SPOILED
This song really opened up me up to alt rock/ punk, It really led me down a path of to so many artists that I can’t live without now that influence me so much now.
SHORT STACK: PRINCESS
Ah Short Stack… definitely influenced a few questionable hair style choices in High School! But honestly these guys drove my passion to form a band with my friends. Their Short Stack TV episodes on Youtube made being a band look so awesome and achievable which is ultimately what lead to Haliday existing.
FOUR YEAR STRONG: ONE STEP AT A TIME
I still don’t know how they play these riffs and sing at the same time, but love these guys so much. I think they definitely perfected pop punk breakdowns and beards.
BLINK 182: ASTHENIA
I actually can’t do these lists without at least one track from Blink. This was the first track I heard of their self-titled album and it just blew my mind. I remember desperately YouTubing the rest of the album after hearing it which eventually lead to me playing bass in a Blink 182 cover band.
FM STATIC: DEFINITELY MAYBE
Aston is actually the only other person I know who listened to this in High School, it’s corny as hell but damn I love it. An unusual mixture of country/pop punk, it’s hard to explain but I was obsessed.
COLUMBUS: DOWNSIDES OF BEING HONEST
I go back to this track at least weekly, god damn Alex’s raspy voice won me over so quick. They send out nice little notes with their merch signed by them, I had it blue tac’d to my wall for years. I also had the biggest fanboy moment when I met them, I’m not sure if they noticed but I was basically hyperventilating.
BALANCE AND COMPOSURE: REFLECTION
This band changed the way I wrote music, I think “huge balance vibes” is the most common thing I get after people hear my music for the first time. I don’t know what this song did to my brain but after hearing it but I haven’t written the same since.
