Mercury Prize-shortlisted British singer-songwriter, composer and producer Nick Mulvey is hitting our shores next month, in support of his fifth studio album Dark Harvest, Pt. 2. To celebrate, the musician has curated an exclusive playlist for MILKY full of songs that influence, and resonate with him.
Kicking off in Brisbane's The Princess Theatre on February 18, the run of shows will continue on to Sydney's Liberty Hall and Melbourne's Northcote Theatre, before wrapping up at Perth's Astor Theatre on February 23. Tickets are on sale now.
I wanted to make a playlist of songs that either influenced my recent album Dark Harvest, Pt. 2 or resonate naturally with the record’s themes of faith and redemption. Let’s go...
ECHO OF MY SHADOW - AURORA
I admire Aurora a lot. I saw her perform in Mexico City before I made the album and she showed me what fearlessness is alllll about.
MELODY DAY - CARIBOU AND FOURTET
This song is a standard-setter for me, and guided some of my writing decisions in Dark Harvest, Pt. 2. Pure class.
SONGS OF HOPE - NICOLAS JAAR
In the studio I sometimes ask myself "what would Nicolas Jaar do?" and it usually guides me to a less obvious, yet still heartfelt choice.
TODO HOMMEM - AO VIVO
This one. I mean, talk about pacing... Such a special song! I listened to this through the recording process and it reminded me to go gently.
BLESS THE WEATHER - JOHN MARTYN
I've long loved John Marytn - singer-songwriter magnificence that I aspire to.
TALK TO THE LORD - NATALIE BERGMAN
I just love Natalie Bergman's heart for Jesus and the way she spins it into very cool art, via some flawless songwriting.
GLORY - SAULT
One of the many things I love about Sault is the way they wear their faith. It's unashamed and unabashed yet also subtle and understated. I respect that balance.
JESUS CHILDREN OF AMERICA - STEVIE WONDER
There's nothing new I can say about this absolute classic except that when you hear it again it WILL sound better than you even remembered.
NANA - RAINER SCHEURENBRAND
A truly timeless melody. And the flutes in the middle fuck me upppp.
OLALLA - BLANCO WHITE
The more I listen, the more I love this song. It stirs in me deep emotions and i'm grateful.
Dark Harvest, Pt. 2 is out now.
