Acclaimed Australian artist Luke Steele has treated us all with the announcement of his debut solo album, Listen To The Water. The musician has offered up the first taste of the body of work with his new single, Common Man.
“I’m taking you on a journey to myself”, Steele says of his forthcoming album. “This solo record was a chance for me to be naked, fearless and on my own. That was confronting. There was salvation and sadness, dreams and nightmares, heroes and villains. Strange changes, epiphanies, miracles and madness.”
The guitar-led track is a far cry from the luminary electronic work with his band Empire Of The Sun, leaning into more acoustic and organic sonics below Steele's distinct floating vocals. Conceptually, the song is an ode to the underdog, exploring the good that comes with hard work, and the emotional toll it can leave. The release arrives alongside an official visual, directed by the musicians longtime creative collaborator, Jodi Steele
“This song is about existing between beauty and torment, mentally and emotionally. Being the common man but not part of the conformity. As your endurance is tested your character is forming. Visually the video was shot at the height of snow fall here at the Eccentric Farm where we had the opportunity to shoot in such a pristine and alien environment. Luke cuts a dark figure, a black shadow against the stark white backdrop. Light and dark elements co-existing, not unlike what lives within us all.” Jodi shares of the visual.
Last year, we caught up with Steele to chat about his collaborative project with Jarrad Rogers, H3000. Read the interview here!
Listen To The Water is out May 13. Watch the visual for Common Man below.
