Just when you thought the holiday season had settled comfortably into tradition, The Pretty Reckless emerge like a snowman on fire, bringing their unmistakable rock grit to Christmas with Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas. It’s a bold and refreshing pivot for a band best known for for their rock anthems, but one that feels both exciting and deeply personal.
The centrepiece of the release is a reimagined version of Where Are You Christmas, a song forever tied to front woman Taylor Momsen’s childhood role as Cindy Lou Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. But this isn’t just a nostalgic rehash. Two decades later, Momsen’s voice has transformed; richer, rawer, and charged with the weight of experience. What was once a wide-eyed ballad now crackles with emotional depth, turning a sweet holiday staple into a cinematic rock epic. The song features both Momsen’s original recording, fused within a fresh take. It creates a sentimental moment within the singers career, bringing together both the past and the present.
“Revisiting Where Are You Christmas 25 years later feels like coming home to a part of myself I hadn’t seen in a long time.” Momsen reflects. “I was just a child when I first sang it, and I never could’ve imagined the way the song, and the film, would stay with people for so long and unknowingly shape my career path as an adult. Recording it now, with all the life I’ve lived in between, I hear it through a different lens.. but the heart of it is the same. It’s about wonder, hope, and holding on to the magic - something I think we all need more than ever.”
That sentiment is the emotional thread that ties the EP together. While Where Are You Christmas is the headline-grabber, the original tracks on Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas deserve their own spotlight. These songs are set to lean hard into the band’s signature sound; gritty guitar riffs, thunderous drums, and Momsen’s unmistakable vocal snarl. But there’s also an unexpected warmth beneath the distortion. It’s not about reinventing Christmas music, but reclaiming it through the lens of a rock band that’s never been afraid to colour outside the lines.
For longtime fans, this EP is a fascinating full-circle moment. For newcomers, it’s a gateway to the band’s emotional range and unapologetic spirit. Either way, Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas doesn’t just add to the holiday canon - it challenges it, kicks it into gear, and gives it a heavy-metal halo. Christmas, it seems, can still surprise us.
Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas is out October 3 digitally, and November 14 physically.
