Junipo has crashed onto the scene with Tommy Gunn, a raw and unfiltered sonic blast that dials rock energy to eleven.
The musical project Oliver Kirby - you may know him from his previous musical endeavour LOVER or work with other local artists. Now, Kirby has made way for a bold new alias, Junipo, which will culminate in a six-track EP Soundspeed - due out this September.
From the very first power-chord, Tommy Gunn grabs you by the throat - an explosive riff full punk-fuelled energy - and never lets go. Co-written and shaped in the studio with fellow Sydney artist Nick Ward, the cut hits hard and fast, weaving thick, densely layered production into its compact runtime.
On the surface, the lyrics spin the tale of a surreal house party and its enigmatic ringleader (Tommy) delivering chaos, euphoria, and that ever-present question: “Does it make you feel good?” It’s more than a lyric; it’s a philosophical sharp inhale during a frenzied track, suspended between celebration and a primal kind of high.
The accompanying video, co-directed by Charles Buxton‑Leslie (DMA’s, Ashwarya) and Kirby himself, takes the mania off the rails. It a gritty Aussie take on Trainspotting, fuelled by DIY practical effects. As Kirby is quite literally thrown around the house by the force of his own music, the video becomes a chaotic visual metaphor for the songs sonic intensity. Despite the DIY ethos, every frame feels purposeful: the strobing guitar riffs literally lift Kirby off his feet, transforming into a psych-rock fantasy. The clip’s audacious visual concept underscores just how far Kirby is willing to go to bring this fever dream to life.
Tommy Gunn is the perfect declaration of intent from Junipo: belligerent, lyrically sparse but emotionally potent, and anchored by guitar-driven production that refuses to be background filler. It’s punk bravado, barroom theatrics, and experimental DIY video-making rolled into one adrenaline-fueled package. If this is just the start of Soundspeed, then buckle up; Kirby is only just beginning to rip through the genre’s limits.
Tommy Gunn is out now!
