With their long awaited third studio album angel in realtime just around the corner, Australian legends Gang Of Youths have shared a stunning visual for their latest single in the wake of your leave.
Directed by Joel Barney, frontman Dave Le’aupepe is accompanied by a troupe of dancers, dancing through the streets of London against technicolour hues that capture the electrifying sonics of the track, whilst elegantly juxtaposing the conceptual nature of in the wake of your leave. Stitching together three extended takes, the visual is reminiscent of uplifting numbers from musicals of the ‘50s and ‘60s, recontextualised within a modern realm.
Speaking of the track, Barney shares: “When I first heard the track, I knew the video had to be larger-than-life. Dave came to me with a ‘Singing in the Rain’ meets ‘Top Hat’ concept that paid homage to the great musicals of the ‘50s and ‘60s. We wanted to merge elements of old school Hollywood with a modern edge.
"Using three long takes and the musical-like choreography gave the video a real theatrical feel. I knew Dave was a brilliant performer from working together previously, but we wanted to push him even further outside of his comfort zone. Of course, he nailed it.”
The uplifting track casts an introspective gaze, navigating grief and the acceptance of death, with frontman Dave Le’aupepe's bewitching vocals soar above driving percussion provided by a collective of drummers from the Cook Islands, captivating harmonies from the Auckland Gospel Choir and moving strings arranged by Tom Hobden.
Arriving next February, angel in realtime. serves as an ode to Le’aupepe's late father, rooted in his Samoan heritage. As heard on the lead single, the man himself, the record is set to continue the bands implementation of samples from David Fanshawe’s field recordings of Indigenous Pacific music, with contributions from a number of Pasifika and Māori vocalists and instrumentalists. “The album is about the life and legacy of Dave's father, indigenous identity, death, grief and God. And also the Angel, Islington.” the five-piece share.
The band are also set to return to Australian stages this year, off the back of the new album. Kicking off in Perth on July 30, the run of shows will continue on to Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart, before crossing the Tasman to New Zealand for performances in Wellington and Auckland. The band will also take to the stage in Brisbane, with more details around the Brisbane and Hobart date to be announced soon.
Forming in 2011, Gang Of Youths have gone from strength to strength, with two acclaimed records, 2015’s The Positions and 2017’s Go Farther In Lightness, under their belt, with the latter earning them four prestigious ARIA Awards. Their 2015 premiere performance on Australia’s MTV Unplugged proved their .... as a live act, with sold out shows across the country, and support slots across Europe and the U.S with Mumford & Sons and Foo Fighters. Earlier this year, the four-piece shared their superb EP, total serene.
