Disney has officially dropped the curtain (just a little) on its latest generational body-swap comedy, and longtime fans are buzzing. The teaser trailer and poster for Freakier Friday, a follow-up to the 2003 hit Freaky Friday, reintroduce Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in roles that shaped their careers and left an enduring mark on early 2000s pop culture. Now, more than two decades later, the pair are back - and the premise is delightfully familiar but with a modern twist.
Set to hit theatres in Australia and New Zealand on August 7, 2025, Freakier Friday sees Curtis and Lohan returning as Tess and Anna Coleman. Time has passed, but the chaos of magically swapped identities hasn’t been left behind. Anna is now a mom herself, juggling a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter, while Tess, ever the composed professional, must once again confront the emotional rollercoaster of youth - from the inside out. If the teaser is any indication, lightning isn’t just striking twice - it’s making landfall with even more generational baggage and emotional stakes.
The film is helmed by Nisha Ganatra (Late Night, The High Note), whose knack for balancing heart and humor makes her a promising steward for this new chapter. Based on Mary Rodgers’ beloved novel, the movie reunites familiar faces while introducing a dynamic new cast, including Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Rosalind Chao, Chad Michael Murray, Vanessa Bayer, and Mark Harmon. With an ensemble like this, the film clearly aims to expand the story’s universe while keeping its heart rooted in familial dysfunction, awkward self-discovery, and - of course - comedy born of chaos. Curtis also steps in to the role of producer, with Lohan helming the project as an executive producer.
The teaser doesn’t give much away - but what it does show is enough to stir excitement: body-swapping, generational tension, and the absurdity of watching two women try (and fail) to navigate life in each other’s shoes. Again.
Get ready, because the magic is back - and it might be even freakier the second time around.
