Melbourne act, Convenience Store have announced the release of their debut album, Tabis, set to drop this September. Alongside the announcement comes the release of their new single, I Wanna Be Your Dancer. To celebrate, the band have shared with MILKY the music, fashion and books that inspired the record.
“It’s an indie-pop love song about wanting to serve someone, and relying on their presence to feel grounded and safe,” the band say of their latest track. “We actually wrote it as teenagers, but never had the production chops to give it what it deserved until now.”
THE BLUE NILE
We really like the simplicity of their records, and how Paul Buccanan’s songwriting is so emotional and vivid. They're able to take a few ingredients and self-produce these records that create such a unique world.
MARTIN MARGIELA
DIY recording is often about allowing all the tactile little glitches and scuffs to breathe and be part of what you’ve made, not trying to scrub them out and over-edit. It makes me think of Margiela and having all the ‘hidden’ details of how garments are made just flipped out and visible. It’s clothing that announces how it was made.
KARL OVE KNAUSGÅRD
His novels are amazing, and it points to how making any kind of art is this divine act – anything taken from the intangible mental or spiritual realm and clarified in artistic form is bound to be interesting. He shows that you don’t have to worry about writing stuff that’s like perfected and ‘right’, it’s just interesting when it’s ‘true’ and is brought forth from some authentic inner place.
THE BEATLES
It’s where this whole studio band thing comes from.
KAPITAL
I have these jeans from the Japanese brand Kapital that I wear way too often, like almost every day. I used to have a different pair that slowly disintegrated from wearing them too much, so I got my friend who was in Japan to find me two more of the same pair. Shout out to Malcolm.
They’re an influence because they’re just practical pants to wear all the time and feel comfortable recording in. I like creating processes and routines in recording that I can trust.
