Boorloo/Perth indie alt-rock trio, Polly have dropped their new EP, Maybe. To celebrate the release, he's taking us through the collection of songs track-by-track...
This weekend, the band will kick off their national tour in Perth. The run of shows will continue on to Melbourne, Sydney, Wollongong, Burleigh Heads, Brisbane, Albany, Esperance, Bunbury, Margaret River and Tweed Heads. Tickets are on sale now.
SHUT UP
This was actually one of the last songs we wrote for the EP, but it very quickly became one of our favourites. It's probably the heaviest moment on the record and was the song that really pushed us to lean into a bigger, more dynamic sound. Lyrically it's about getting caught up in your own head and overthinking everything to the point where you just wish it would stop. It always feels pretty cathartic to play live.
TELL YOUR FRIENDS
This is probably one of the more direct songs on the EP. It's about knowing you should move on from someone, but still feeling completely tied to them anyway. The chorus almost tries to convince itself that everything's fine, while the rest of the song kind of falls apart around it. It quickly became one of our favourite songs to play because it really opens up live, and it's one we're so excited to take around the country.
DOUBT
Doubt was the first song we released from Maybe and it really felt like the perfect introduction to this chapter. It came together pretty naturally once we landed on the chorus. It's about putting so much into someone without really knowing where you stand, and constantly questioning whether you'll ever be enough. Sonically it captures the balance we were chasing across the whole EP, big guitars and loud moments that still leave room for vulnerability.
FORGET YOU
Forget You sits in that space where you know a relationship has kind of run its course, but moving on isn't as simple as deciding to. It's probably one of the more straightforward songs lyrically on the EP, but that's what we like about it. Recording this one was a really fun process because it changed so much. It actually started out as one of the most upbeat songs we'd written, but slowly evolved into something much more restrained. It ended up becoming one of the songs that really defined the sound of Maybe.
HIT
Hit closes the EP and feels like everything finally comes to a head. It probably captures the emotional push and pull that runs through the whole record better than any other song. There are moments where it feels hopeful and others where it completely unravels, and we liked never really giving it a neat resolution. It felt like the right way to finish the EP, leaving things a little unresolved, but feeling like you've finally said everything you needed to.
Maybe is out now.
