Brisbane/Meanjin-based punk/alt-rockers, The Dandys have shared a new taste of their debut EP, Sex and Feuds, with the release of Gums. To celebrate, the band have shared with MILKY their top five memorable sleeps from their time on the road!
"Gums is about releasing the pressure. We all know growing up is overwhelming, so is booking dental checkups and managing your chronic iron deficiency. It’s about the mindset of wanting self-improvement but lacking the motivation or desire to do the mundane. Mostly though, 'Gums' is a track that gives you permission to take that pressure off and have a good time. It’s not really that deep." the band share.
SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS
This was way better than we thought it would be. We camped Thursday-Sunday and it was glorious. We had these tents set up for us with stretcher beds and mattresses. We brought extra blankets, oodies and fluffy socks. Then ended up pushing the stretchers together to create mega bed to optimise warmth. Mads put the rain sounds on the UE Boom as usual and the sleeps were unreal. 7/10.
SOME HOTEL IN MELBOURNE
This was our first night of the big Hope D tour so we were pretty excited for the inaugural hotel bed jump. We lost the hotel key in 5 minutes, Nick cried over a biscoff doughnut at how good it was, we ate gourmet burgers (except felix, he got fish tacos) at midnight and fell into the most glorious slumber of the whole tour. We shared a couple beds, had a cuddle, got aircon flowing and the rain sounds pumpin. 9/10.
IBIS BUDGET IN SYDNEY
This was something else. With 4 adults and a bands worth of instruments, there wasn’t a whole lot of room to move. But at 3am before our 6am flight, the very firm bunk beds came in handy as we deliriously wrote some stupid song that will never see the light of day and watched Nick down way too many mini milks. Hot Tip: Don’t drink the mini milks. 5/10.
PLANE SEAT NAPS
Obviously these are never ideal but you gotta do what you gotta do. It varied between head on the tray table, drooling on each other over to Perth and passing around the singular neck pillow Henry remembered. With some good headphones, sunnies and a hoodie, it actually made for some passable sleeps on the road. Grim but they got us through the tour. 3/10.
INDIVIDUAL FEATS
Overall we had pretty decent setups when we’ve been on the road but we would like to point out how rare the opportunity to sleep on tour really is. An honourable mention here goes to Henry, for sleeping next to the bass amp while Hope and her band were sound checking. We are all still in disbelief he managed that one. Second, goes to Felix for falling asleep in the airport bathroom. That can’t have been enjoyable but we respect it. We’re giving these ones a 10/10 purely for effort and the desperation behind the naps.
Listen to Gums below! Sex and Feuds is out. September 15.
