Wollongong based electronic producer Black Lotus Mind Control has teamed up with indie musician Blue Picnic for their new track Beyond The Black Rainbow. If you’re like us and can’t wait, listen to the track and watch the music video right here on MILKY before its release!
The release marks the pairs first collaboration, which comes after after working on a variety of disparate projects that never saw the light of day. Beyond The Black Rainbow is the first instalment in a series of releases from the duo, with more to come over the next few months. Bringing their unique brand of dark psychedelia to the track, the song transcends you to a serene and atmospheric world, creating an ambience with collapsing piano melodies over humming synth bass and delay-soaked vocals. As the piece builds to a crescendo, it takes an abrupt turn, infusing hip-hop sounds within an electronic soundscape.
Created with filmmaker, photographer and artist Gus Armstrong, the hazy and dreamlike aesthetic of the visual was conceptualised as an accompaniment to the spatial and ethereal elements of the track. The music video was filmed at Illawarra’s creative hub known as ‘the space’. Due for demolition by the end of the year, Beyond The Black Rainbow was one of the last projects to be created on site.
Speaking of the release, Black Lotus Mind Control shares: “We wanted to capture the essence of reality, something that you can find in the smallest things. Beauty and tragedy are really from the same part of town. It is where we all come from and it feels nice to remember that.”
The musical project of Sean Lea, Black Lotus Mind Control’s pieces aren’t confined by genres, instead creating genre-bending pieces. His counterpart Blue Picnic explores the genre of bedroom pop/rock, bringing his knack for story telling to his music which is laced with shimmering guitars and uncomplicated
