LA-based electronic duo Phantoms have dropped their sophomore album, This Can’t Be Everything. To celebrate the release, the musical masterminds behind the project, Kyle Kaplan and Vinnie Pergola, have curated an exclusive playlist for MILKY, full of tunes they're loving at the moment.

This Can’t Be Everything is such a personal album for us. We knew what we wanted to make and were so lucky to have Foreign Family let us see our vision through. Much of it was written while we were stuck at home during quarantine, a bit unsure of the future. Now as we’re getting back out there and seeing people singing these songs when we play them live it feels so surreal. We can’t wait for everyone to get the full context of the music when they listen to the album as a whole. We feel like there’s a lot of yearning in this album because of that - yearning to find more in life. It’s probably our favorite music we’ve made and we couldn’t be more proud.”

PLAIN OUTTA LUCK - EWAN MCVICAR

Been really into Ewan McVicar lately. His DJ sets are so high energy and well curated. We tend to look to the UK for what’s coming next and I think this is a good example. That groove when the bass comes in is insane - such a perfect release of tension.

NYP2 - CAMELPHAT

This is one of those songs that always manages to squirrel its way into all of our DJ sets. We really would love to stop playing it but it just works every single time. The high strings and French house samples mixed with that bassline on the drop - mama mia. We still get into ourselves everytime we DJ it.

LOVE IS WITH YOU (HOT TODDY REMIX) - CRAZY P

This is one of those tracks that happened to come on recently while I was cleaning or something and I’ve been listening to it non-stop for weeks. Reminds me of the music we listened to when we were first discovering electronic music. The production and synths and vocals feel like a warm blanket. It’s just so good.

BLIND - HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR

This song brings back the most intense sensory memory for our formative years in dance music. Everytime I hear it I feel like I’m 19 again belting the entire song (not just the chorus btw) next to a pool in Palm Springs or in some sweaty LA after party. If you play this around us we will stop what we are doing and dance guaranteed. Definitely a show pump up song.

JOY (LOVE’S NOT REAL) - JOY ANONYMOUS

Over the holidays last year, Fred Again threw a very insane popup party in a Chinese restaurant in LA with Joy Anonymous. It was so wild and truly one of the better nights we’ve had in LA recently - I had to look up Joy Anonymous after and found this track. Holy shit it is so infectious. You can’t help but dance to it. Perfect sample - it all just feels so carefree in the best way.

THANK YOU BABY - THINGS YOU SAY

There’s not much to say about this one other than I wish I made it. Perfectly simple. It’s a song you feel like you’ve heard before even if it’s your first time. Been playing this one a lot lately.

I DON’T WANNA WAIT - THE WAR ON DRUGS

They can’t all be dance songs on this list! We both love the War On Drugs. We also both love big finales in songs. With artists now under the pressure (pun intended) to get Spotify listeners hooked within the first 4 seconds of a song, we appreciate the build. This whole album is great too.

GET INNOCUOUS (ELECTRIC LADY SESSION) - LCD SOUNDSYSTEM

Our all-time favorites are probably LCD Soundsystem. I picked the live version of Get Innocuous - one of their absolute best songs - because I heard it for the first time the other day and it totally sucked me in. LCD Soundsystem is as much about their live versions as their studio records. Goddamn… when it devolves into noise and timbales and synths at the end you feel like you’re in the pit of one of their shows.

NEVER SEEN YOU DANCE - TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS

Always excited to hear really good indie dance records like this, it ends up inspiring us more. TEED has been a killer for years but the music he’s been putting out lately is pretty next-level. Really tight production, grooves, and his vocals are sounding better than ever. Love the piano resolve at the end of this one.

BLENDA - BOLIS PUPUL

Really wanted to include a Soulwax track on this list and then remembered they helped produce this awesome track. Love hearing their flair as producers but also letting Charlotte Adigery’s amazing voice really take front and centre. This whole album is so damn cool and weird and a must listen.
