UK folk-punk act, Frank Turner has announced the release of his new album, Defiance, alongside the release of a new song, Do One. To celebrate the release, the musician has curated an exclusive playlist for MILKY full of tracks of defiance.

Do One is the last song I wrote for the new album, and the first song on that album, as well as the first single. So it’s a summation of what I’m trying to say with this record, a record about survival and defiance, but also one with a sense of fun and self-deprecation. 19 years into my solo career, I’m still standing up and putting out some of my best work. It feels good.” he shares of the song.

THIS YEAR - THE MOUNTAIN GOATS.

I listen to this song every New Years Eve after midnight, it always sets my year on the best trajectory, it’s the perfect defiant song.

I WON’T BACK DOWN - JOHNNY CASH.

I know that this is a Tom Petty song of course, and the original is pretty good, but the JC version is the classic I’d argue, and Petty even sings harmonies on it, to prove the point! Does what it says on the tin.

I WILL SURVIVE - CAKE.

I don’t think there’s much to be said about this song which hasn’t been said before. The Gloria Gaynor original is so ubiquitous it’s almost a folk song. The Cake version brings a bit more funk and some Sinatra vocal stylings to the party. Love it.

RISE ABOVE - BLACK FLAG.

The quintessential hardcore punk song, and defiance is its central theme. I have listened to this roughly 10 billion times.

TRUE TRANS SOUL REBEL - AGAINST ME!.

I’d long loved AM!’s music, but when Laura Jane dropped this tune on the world my heart was filled to bursting with punk rock joy. The definitive statement of independence.

I AIN’T GOT NO (I GOT LIFE) - NINA SIMONE.

This has forever been a go-to song for me. The mix of sheer joy and rebelliousness in the sentiment, the exuberant musicality - there’s no one like Ms Simone.

BLACK STEEL IN THE HOUR OF CHAOS - PUBLIC ENEMY.

I’m not a hip hop expert, and my life experience is not the same as Chuck D’s, but I challenge anyone to find a more defiant opening line than this.

TO HELL WITH GOOD INTENTIONS - MCCLUSKY.

This was the song my old band would play on the stereo every single day on tour to get our day started, to help us cut through the stress and the bullshit of underground touring. It still fires me up now.

WE SHALL OVERCOME - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN (SEEGER SESSIONS).

Defiance songs go back a long way, and this is one of the oldest. It gives me goosebumps to hear this song and think about the historical moments it has soundtracked over the centuries. This is a lovely version as well.

I WANT IT ALL - QUEEN.

You’ve got to finish these playlists in style, go out with a bang. Here we go
