Australian indie-folk/pop artist, Chris Lanzon has shared his new single, Lilo. To celebrate the release, the musician has curated an exclusive playlist for MILKY full of songs that capture the feel of the track.
Lilo captures that feeling of wanting to be there for someone you care about, unconditionally - even when they feel distant, or like they’ve become a total stranger. Maybe they’re family, a lifelong friend, a lost lover. You’ll always care for them, and you’ll always show up when they need you.
Here are some other songs that ‘feel’ like Lilo. Bittersweet.
ANYTHING - ADRIANNE LENKER
This might just be the perfect song? Everything Adrianne does is pure magic. I took a songwriting class with her at the top of the year and it changed my life. The unconditional love and grieving undertone in this song feels similar to Lilo. Sad and beautiful at the same time. Ruminating on the past, grateful for the present, hopeful for the future, all at once.
BLOOD BANK - BON IVER
Bon has been a guiding light and deep inspiration for me for years. For Emma, Forever Ago was one of the first albums I listened to and fell in love with growing up. This song explores the uncertainty of love, and the simple things that make us human, the things that connect us. The weight and value of just being there with each other.
ROOM FOR YOU - BER
Ber is quickly becoming one of my favourite new artists. She heard Lilo on social media a couple weeks ago and reached out, saying she loved it. It was a nice surprise and I’ve been listening to her new EP all week. I feel like we’re in a similar place with our music and write in a similar way, so I’m glad our paths have crossed. This song in particular feels super special, sharing the same sentiment of Lilo - making space for someone you care about, even when it hurts.
STUPID - PHOEBE GO
My favourite artist in Australia right now (you must listen to her new album if you haven’t). This song is stupid good. Loving someone and showing up for them when it’s unreciprocated and unwanted hurts like hell and makes you question everything about yourself. This song is a knife to the heart, but so comforting in its raw honesty.
BRUISES OFF THE PEACH - RYAN BEATTY
While my new music is largely about unconditional love and pushing pain aside to show up for the people you care about, sometimes the best thing you can do to love someone, and love yourself, is to move on and go your separate ways. This song is that.
I TOLD YOU SO - BRISTON MARONEY
Sometimes the people who love us know us better than we know ourselves.
ANGEL IN THE SNOW - ELLIOTT SMITH
Pure, crushing, devotional infatuation. Wanting to know everything about someone but feeling inadequate around them. My favourite Elliott Smith song.
MOON SONG - PHOEBE BRIDGERS
Had to have Phoebe in this list. Same again. Pure, crushing, devotional infatuation. Loving someone from afar. Waiting for them. Always there, whenever they need. Even when it’s the most painful thing in the world.
BULLET - ELIZABETH M. DRUMMOND
My favourite lyric in Lilo is ‘there’s a crack beneath the screen, there’s a bullet in my teeth’, about preparing to bite the bullet when you know things are falling apart. But you’re holding off. Holding onto the good parts. Elizabeth articulates this same feeling here so perfectly. The defeated admission that it’s time to move on. Maybe from a lover, from a friendship, from a demanding part of yourself that’s weighing you down. I love this song so much.
I HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH - SEAROWS
That got dark for a minute… but I wanted this playlist to end on a positive note. This song is about truly being grateful for what you have in the present moment, all the little things. The pursuit of true contentment. Letting go.
