Singer-songwriter Matilda Pearl had dropped her new single, GATEKEEPING DUMBSHIT. To celebrate the release, the singer has shared with MILKY some behind-the-scenes snaps of her time recording the track, filming its music video and launching the single with a performance at Northcote Social Club.
“GATEKEEPING DUMBSHIT is about those people who are unnecessarily competitive in life. Like when you tell someone you're loving an artist and they reply "oh yeah but you're not an og fan if you weren't there when they released [insert edgy song name]." They're always busier, more tired, more hungover and more edgy. The song was written in around 3 hours. I was deep in my Remi Wolf obsession at the time. We were all just going back and forth on annoying things people gatekeep, and it pretty much came together on its own. We deconstructed it a bit. We didn't want the song format to be typical, so it's kind of hard to figure out what the verse, pre chorus and chorus is. It was really fun challenging that structure and I think it gives it the chaotic vibe we were trying to emulate.” Pearl shares.
SINGLE LAUNCH SHOW AT NORTHCOTE SOCIAL CLUB
All show shots taken by Jade Florence.
1) Totally candid mirror shot where I just happen to be showing off my space junk. 2) I'm levitating. 3) Closing my eyes and pretending I'm Taylor in my reputation era. 4) We brought out some special guests for Nice to Know Ya. Breaking bad meets Dua Lipa. Here's me checking if Keeks was still breathing in the hazmat suit. 5) All my favourite people in one shot. 6) The encore was just a wholesome hug fest. 7) We made a circle at this rehearsal and all performed to each other. It was the first time I heard live drums on my songs. I was like a little kid at Christmas. 8) My beautiful friends got me little minion doughnuts, stuck candles in them and sung "happy headliner show to you."
