Militarie Gun are back with a powerful new single, Throw Me Away, offering a raw glimpse into the emotional landscape of their upcoming album, God Save The Gun. This track continues to showcase Ian Shelton’s remarkable ability to blend urgent, melodic energy with deeply introspective lyrics that strike with an almost painful honesty.
Following the intense vulnerability of their recent single B A D I D E A, their latest offering delves even deeper into the turmoil of self-doubt and the craving for validation. Shelton explains the song’s core, saying, “Throw Me Away is about the feeling of only being valued when you’re visible or useful and the desperate need to hold onto that. What someone loves about you one day might be cited as a reason they hate you now. It’s the desire for external validation and also the deep resentment of it.” The release is accompanied by a striking performance video directed by Shelton himself, adding a visual intensity to the song’s themes.
God Save The Gun emerges as an intensely personal and candid record. Shelton reflects on the album as a snapshot of being at one’s lowest, even when life should feel like a pinnacle moment - a paradox of self-destruction intertwined with fragile self-belief. He openly acknowledges, “I’m well aware that being this vulnerable turns my personal trauma into a marketing hook for this album, but I’m fine with it, if not provoking it. Over the past couple years, as I spoke about addiction from the perspective of someone affected by it, I became the one struggling with it. There’s a farcical logic to entering a situation, fully knowing the consequences, and doing it anyway – but that’s where my head was when I started leaning on drinking.”
Where Life Under The Gun, Militarie Gun’s 2023 debut, explored cycles of pain from the perspective of an observer in a family affected by addiction, God Save The Gun brings Shelton himself into the spotlight as the protagonist of his own struggles. The urgency of the album came into sharp focus only as they prepared to enter the studio in early 2025, making this record a true confession from the front lines of Shelton’s battles.
Despite significant lineup changes during the previous touring cycle, the band, now solidified with guitarists William Acuña and Kevin Kiley, bassist Waylon Trim, and drummer David Stalsworth, has only grown stronger.
The album’s creation was a collaborative effort, featuring contributions from longtime co-writer James Goodson (Dazy), newcomer Nick Panella (MSPAINT), and producer Riley MacIntyre (known for work with Adele and Arlo Parks), who helped balance the album’s expansive sound with its emotional core.
With Throw Me Away and the anticipation building around God Save The Gun, Militarie Gun continues to carve a unique space in modern punk and indie rock, offering music that is as cathartic as it is catchy, and unflinchingly human.
God Save The Gun is out October 17th.
