Tokyo-based, Sydney-raised producer, songwriter, Joey Sachi has unveiled her debut EP, RISE. To celebrate, she is sharing with us five music venues in Tokyo that every Australian music fan should visit.
“The entire EP was written, recorded, and produced in Tokyo," says Sachi. "During the first half of 2025, I found myself on a real creative roll. Each track started to feel connected to the next. When AKINAT started to work on the EP, we quickly realised that as two perfectionists - taking a song all the way to release doesn’t always come naturally. As the saying goes, “perfect is the enemy of good.” I found a deep sense of creative freedom in pushing back against the constant urge to overthink.”
BONOBO
First stop once you touch down in Tokyo! A super intimate, two storey house close to Harajuku. The sun sets and the magic begins… I can’t give too much away - trust me you need to experience it for yourself.
BLUE NOTE TOKYO
Changing genres up entirely here… a must visit iconic venue for jazz connoisseurs and lovers alike. The coziest, dreamiest little spot in Miniaoyama attracts international soloists and outstanding local talent - it’s usually best if you book in advance.
HVEN
Stepping into the venue itself feels like you have teleported into the future. It hosts an eclectic mix of artists, in a minimalist’s dream location!
THE BAMBOO BAR
Think of this as your ‘boujee’ sophisticated night out on the town. Located on one of the top floors of the Mandarin Oriental, it serves award-winning cocktails and honestly the in house jazz pianists are some of the best I have ever had the privilege of experiencing.
CONTACT
This one technically doesn’t quite make the list… sadly it has been permanently closed! However I had to include it… forever hopeful it will reopen its doors. It housed many a sublime set, including of course the 2022 Boiler Room.
