Sydney-based singer-songwriter Hugo Basclain has unveiled his debut EP, NOSTALGIA IS A LIAR. To celebrate the release, the musician has shared with MILKY five Australian acts to watch in 2023.
'It’s a compilation of stories that I feel have impacted me, and shaped me as a person and as an artist. It’s mainly centered around one heavy break up + some pretty essential parts of my life that have shaped who I am today.” Basclain shares of the EP.
EDDIE BENJAMIN
Eddie had a massive year this year and I honestly think next year he’ll be a household name. Ever since I heard Speechless I’ve been a massive fan and had him on repeat. His blend of this neo soul and pop sonic and along with his poetic lyricism is something that really inspires me. He’s just a generational talent and I can’t wait to see what happens this coming year.
JORDIE IRELAND
Jordie again is someone who had a massive year. He put out some of my favourite pop songs I’ve heard in a really long time. His records combine this polish but delivered in a charismatic and unique way and that’s really what hooked me on his music. He’s got an EP coming out this year and that’s something I really can’t wait for.
KANADA THE LOOP
Kanada The Loop is my next pick. All his music has been on repeat for me this year. I love how his music pushes the boundaries of genre. His unique style had me hooked instantly and this feeling of chaotic nostalgia is something that I aspire to create in my tracks. His track Blur, I swear I had on repeat for two weeks straight. He also has an EP coming out that I’m super excited about.
THOMAS PORTER
Next is Thomas Porter. Thomas’ sound is one of my favourites. It’s the perfect mix of happy, sad and nostalgic. ‘Tired’ sums up this mix of emotion and it reminded me so much of being younger. The young and free feeling always inspires me to create. I feel like it always reminds me why I create music, that innocence and vulnerability. I’ve played his music over and over and can’t wait to see what happens for him in 2023.
SAN JOSEPH
My last pic is San Joseph. Every song he’s put out so far I haven’t been able to get out of my head. He delivers these polished songs in a uniquely different way that makes him stand out from the rest, and I really connect with the sound he creates. Again, I feel like vulnerability and rawness is something I always want from music. His song Everything In The Room nearly had me in tears and that’s something that inspires me with my own writing in turn. He’s an incredibly talented singer songwriter and he’s someone I really can’t wait to see prosper in 2023.
