Australian post-punk act dust have released Alastair, a jagged yet melodic cut previewing their debut album Sky Is Falling, arriving October 10. Known for their intense fusion of rapid tempos, free jazz saxophone, and fractured guitar, dust slow the pace here just enough to reveal a warmer, more intricate side of their sound. The track nods to influences like Sonic Youth and The National while firmly rooted in the bands unique vision of a damaged but hopeful world.

Co-frontmen Gabriel Stove and Justin Teale explain the story behind the song: "Alastair is a song about meeting someone down on their luck and feeling conflictingly empathetic for them. It is navigating the challenges of growing up without getting bitter. It’s a short story from when we went on a writing trip in Mullumbimby. We met a man named Alastair at the Mullumbimby Motel and within 5 minutes of meeting him he recounted his whole recent years of life, how he couldn’t get ahead."

Since their 2023 debut EP et cetera, etc, dust have built a reputation for their industrial-tinged rock rooted in their steel city origins. Their restless, genre-defying sound has taken them across major tours supporting Slowdive, Interpol, and Bloc Party, and onto stages with Australian contemporaries like Hockey Dad and Shady Nasty.

Sky Is Falling is set to continue dust’s evolution with a blend of shoegaze, electronic experimentation, abrasive guitars, and elusive saxophone. Reflecting on the album’s creation, the band shares that the phrase “the sky is falling” captured their feelings during their first international tour, symbolising both the unknown and infinite possibilities ahead. This mindset pushed them to take creative risks, resulting in a record that is raw, melancholic, and boldly forward-looking.

Sky Is Falling is out October 10
