Tasmanian indie-pop artist, Abby Wallace has shared her new single, Atlantic Blue. To celebrate the release, the singer has shared with MILKY five songs that inspired the oceanic track.
Hi, I’m Abby Wallace—an indie-pop artist from beautiful Lutruwita/Tasmania. My second single, Atlantic Blue, has just found its way out into the world. I love a good look behind the creative curtain (and a banging song recommendation!!) so thought I'd share with you some music that inspired this track.
DON'T FORGET ME - MAGGIE ROGERS
Maggie is a master of folk sensibilities with a modern spin. There's complexity in the verses, anchored by a wide, open chorus. It leaves us room to breathe. I really wanted to capture that feeling in Atlantic Blue. Maggie also wrote and recorded this album in 5 days. All of the songs have an almost demo-like feel. There's a sense of being close to the source. That was how Atlantic Blue came together as well - quickly, and without the view of a 'finished product'. What you hear is a very special capture of our creative flow state.Â
CORNFLAKE GIRL - TORI AMOS
I love everything about this song. The way Tori holds many things at once in her songwriting is so impressive. Intimacy and aggression, specificity and universality. Lyrically, this song is super intricate. We're not always sure what is going on, but Tori's vocal delivery is so assured that it all just works. I am always reaching for that in my own music. There's also a very lush, 90s, shimmering percussion kind of vibe which definitely mirrors the world of Atlantic Blue.
CHARM YOU - SAMIA
Samia is just one of my favourite lyricists. Whenever I listen to her albums I catch myself flooded with a million song snippets. Something about the way she weaves words is very sensory and visual. Charm You is my favourite song off her second album, Honey. I was listening to that whole record a lot around the time of writing Atlantic Blue. To me, this song is romantic and delicate while also feeling kind of lived-in. There's a conversational element to the way it unfolds. I tried to capture that feeling in the lyrics of Atlantic Blue.
THROWN DOWN - FLEETWOOD MAC
Thematically, this song really plays with a lot of the same ideas as Atlantic Blue. It is ruminating, kind of tragic, and very concerned with the contraindications of yearning and desire. The sparkly percussion element, the handful of well-placed instrumental motifs, different sonic elements collaged together to kind of 'catch' your ear. All of it glued together with a sweeping, hooky chorus. It feels carefully constructed. I am very inspired by that.Â
THIS KISS - FAITH HILL
"It's centrifugal motion, it's perpetual bliss"??? Centrifugal motion is the outward feeling of an object in circular motion. Think, the feeling in your gut when you round a corner in the car, or when a plane banks hard into a turn. We all know it. This obscure, wordy line should feel out of place here, but it doesn't. It's clever, catchy, considered pop—exactly what I strive for as an artist. Anthemic in the best way. Just the right amount of lyrical complexity, just the right amount of space for belting-it-out. And a tiny bit of yeehaw.
