With Giving Up Air, The Temper Trap continue to reignite the emotional intensity that first put them on the map. Earlier this year, the band made their return with Lucky Dimes, reintroducing the world o their indie-rock grit. With their latest offering, we’re treated to a cathartic blend of heartache and hope, housed within a festival-sized synthscape.

Produced by Grammy-nominated Styalz Fuego, Giving Up Air is built to soar. Lush synth layers lift a chorus that feels ready to fill stadiums, but it’s the emotional gravity beneath that gives the track its staying power. Frontman Dougy Mandagi describes the song as rooted in a deeply personal loss, “Giving Up Air” is a very important song for me about a life-changing moment and the unimaginable pain of losing a loved one in tragic circumstances - from the initial shock to sorrow and then anger, and finding glimmers of hope somewhere in between.” Originally conceived for his solo project Bloodmoon, the track found new life when revisited with his bandmates. “It felt magical,” Mandagi says. “Like it had found its true home.”

That sense of rediscovery resonates throughout the song. It carries the DNA of The Temper Trap’s signature sound. The wide-open atmospheres, the emotional lift-off. But there’s a new weight here, a maturity born from real experience. Rather than retreat into abstraction, Giving Up Air confronts pain head-on, finding beauty in vulnerability and power in reflection.

The timing of this release feels symbolic. Following a decade in which their breakout track Sweet Disposition became a perennial favourite (bolstered by recent remixes and a high spot on triple j’s Hottest 100 Australian Songs of All Time), The Temper Trap could have easily coasted on legacy. But instead, they’re showing up with something vital and current.

With a run of Australian headline shows kicking off soon and dates across the UK, US, and Canada on the horizon, The Temper Trap are stepping back onto the global stage with renewed energy and something meaningful to say.
