Nearly two decades after a mother and daughter hilariously swapped lives (and wardrobes) in Disney’s Freaky Friday, the chaos is back - with a twist, and maybe even a second lightning bolt. The much-anticipated sequel, Freakier Friday, is headed exclusively to Australian cinemas on August 7, 2025, and fans of the original are already buzzing with excitement.
In the brand new trailer, we find Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan returning to the roles that sparked a cultural phenomenon, once again portraying Tess and Anna Coleman - only this time, with a new generation to contend with. Anna, no longer the rebellious teenager she once was, is now a mother herself, navigating the unpredictable terrain of blended family life. When fate - or some mysterious cosmic force - strikes again, Anna and Tess find themselves in familiar, yet entirely new, territory.
Adapted once again from Mary Rodgers’ beloved novel, this sequel isn’t just relying on nostalgia. It reflects the changing dynamics of families today - blended, imperfect, and deeply human. If the original Freaky Friday asked what would happen if we literally walked in each other’s shoes, Freakier Friday asks how far empathy can stretch when multiple generations collide.
Under the direction of Nisha Ganatra, the film dives deeper into the complexities of family, identity, and empathy across generations. The story explores the tensions and transformations that occur when past meets present, and when roles reverse in unexpected ways. While the premise echoes the original charm, Freakier Friday seems poised to offer a more layered and modern interpretation of the body-swap comedy.
The ensemble cast adds further depth to the story, with Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons portraying the new kids on the (Coleman) block. Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Rosalind Chao, Chad Michael Murray, Vanessa Bayer, and Mark Harmon round out a cast that bridges familiar faces with exciting new ones. Behind the scenes, the film’s production team includes Kristin Burr, Andrew Gunn, and Jamie Lee Curtis herself, with Lohan also stepping into an executive producer role - marking her evolving presence both in front of and behind the camera.
Disney’s decision to bring this sequel to life now feels like more than a reunion - it feels like a reflection of our times. As parents, children, and stepfamilies try to make sense of their roles in increasingly complex households, Freakier Friday might offer some much-needed laughs - and maybe even a little perspective.
Mark your calendars for August 7. If lightning can strike twice, let’s hope it’s just as freakishly fun the second time around.
