Marvel Studios is boldly stepping into uncharted territory - or more precisely, Earth-828. With Fantastic Four: First Steps, director Matt Shakman trades origin story fatigue for a retro-cosmic family drama that could just be Marvel's most emotionally grounded epic yet. Set in a vibrant alternate 1960s brimming with flying cars and sci-fi optimism, this isn’t your typical MCU affair - and that’s exactly the point.
Leading the charge is Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, delivering the gravitas of a genius with the vulnerability of a man out of time. Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm is the emotional and moral core - pregnant, powerful, and pivotal. Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm brings the charm, while Ebon Moss‑Bachrach’s Ben Grimm gives us a Thing with heart as much as heft.
With Ralph Ineson’s booming presence as the planet-eater and Julia Garner’s icy, mesmerizing Shalla‑Bal (a fresh take on Silver Surfer), First Steps introduces cosmic stakes while never losing sight of its emotional centre: family. This isn’t set to be just another superhero film. Fantastic Four: First Steps looks stylish reinvention of the genre’s original blueprint - the superhero family - retooled for a world that’s craving heart just as much as heroism.
Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps releases July 24, in Australian cinemas.
