Australian artist flowerkid has just kicked off his east coast tour, taking to the stage at Melbourne's Northcote Social Club over the weekend. We caught up with the musician to chat about the tour, Splendour In The Grass, his artistry and so much more!

flowerkid will take over Sydney's Mary's Underground this Thursday, supported by IOAKIM, bringing songs from his latest EP, everyone has a breaking point, to a live setting. Next month, the musician will make his debut at Splendour In The Grass, performing at the iconic Australian festival alongside Gorillaz, Tyler, The Creator, The Strokes, Kacey Musgraves, Jack Harlow, Orville Peck, Yungblud and more!

Not long now till you hit the road! You’ll be playing at Splendour In The Grass and also performing a handful of headline shows. What are you bringing to these performances to make it the ultimate flowerkid live experience? (what can audiences expect from your show?

My audience can expect a huge welcome into the world of flowerkid. Almost like a warm embrace! While the songs are about very sensitive things, i hope to provide listeners with a sense of safety and love.

How important is performing live for you, in terms of making that in person connection with your fans?

It is so very important! When I started out being a musician during covid, live just wasn’t an option. So now that I am able to perform, I love to see the people who support me the most in real life!

What are you most looking forward to about performing at Splendour In The Grass, and which other acts are you keen to catch?

I’m definitely looking forward to a bigger stage. More room to wiggle! Can’t wait to catch The Buoys, MAY-A, Kasey Musgraves and so many more :)

Looking at performing pre-2020 vs now, how do you think audiences are responding to live music in terms of that hunger to experience a live show? And also, what are your feelings towards it now?

From what I have seen, everyone is super excited and engaged with the music at ANY show nowadays. I feel the exact same way! Live is just out of this world… such an experience.

Which three songs do you love playing live, the ultimate three tracks that you want in every set list?

Miss Andry, It’s Happening Again and I Met The Devil At 4 Years Old!

Your latest EP, everyone has a breaking point, is an honest body of work that explores trauma and healing. How important is it to you to use your music as a vehicle to share these stories and provide a space of relatability for listeners?

Music and how it makes me feel is so important to me, and I feel so blessed to use it as my own personal diary. As soon as a few people told me how relatable the music was, sharing it with the world is exactly what I wanted to do. Music can be so universal. Such a beautiful thing.

You taught yourself how to write and produce. What do you think are the advantages of having that complete control over your compositions?

When I make a project from start to finish, I feel so liberated and cathartic. I think it is so important that I get to control my sound, as it is essential to realising my vision.

What do you have in store for the rest of 2022? Is there new music on the horizon?

Indeed! New music is on the way! Once again I am exploring different sounds and genres - can’t wait to share!!
