Perth legends Pond are treating fans in a massive way! The psych-rock four-piece have not only announced the release of their ninth studio album, 9, they've also dropped a brand new track and have revealed a run of tour dates locked in for next month.
The punchy America's Cup arrives alongside a stellar visual, directed by the bands longtime collaborator Kristofski. The video brings a satirical eye to sail races, as we see a team captain auctioning off the winning trophy to die-hard fans. We're met with a variety of vignettes showcasing each punters excitement, paired with vibrant fluoro cut in shots of the captain.
“The beat makes me think of a New York street strut, Sesame Street style,” frontman Nick Allbrook shares of the single. “But it's about Fremantle before Alan Bond gave the big ball of gentrification it's final shove, when it was cheap and harsh and the broken relics of the pre-87 port city were young groovy cats in a secret idyll wedged between the river and the sea. It’s also about blokes being different versions of whatever the hell we've been taught we're supposed to be.”
Produced by Pond and mixed by Jay Watson and James Ireland, their new record is set to bring a more curated approach, set to the bands signature psych-rock sonics. “We sort of gave ourselves permission to make something stuffed this time. We'd settled into a pretty tight routine with the last few albums and wanted to shake a boat with this so we started off with filling a few tape reels with some absolutely heinous improvised sonic babble which, after much sifting, became the first few songs of the album. We also wanted to up the tempo." Allbrook says of the album.
Taking to the stage in Sydney and Melbourne on June 25 and June 25, the four-piece will take to the stage for two nightly sessions in each city, with their co-headline performances with Methyl Ethel having been rescheduled to June 27 and June 28 at Perth’s Magnet House. Fans who pre-order 9 from Pond’s official store to access the Melbourne and Sydney tour pre-sale offer from 9:00am Wednesday 26 May. General public tickets on sale @ 9:00am Friday 28 May from here.
9 is out October 1. Watch the visual for America's Cup below!
