Sydney songwriter/producer Nick Ward has shared his new single ALIEN, written alongside Cub Sport's Tim Nelson and co-produced by Lucianblomkamp. The track serves as the latest taste of the musicians sophomore EP, BRAND NEW YOU, set to arrive next month.
Ward effortlessly weaves together threads of pop-punk and alt-pop within a hip-hop influenced soundscape that offers up textural production beneath the musicians simmering vocals. Laced with intimate and conversational lyricism, ALIEN explores and dissects queer masculinity and the experiences that led to Ward to abolish stereotypes and embrace a new-found confidence in who he is. The song arrives alongside an official visual, self-directed by the musician.
"it's the song that sets up the narrative and themes (of BRAND NEW YOU), while also being a bridge from my first EP, Everything I Wish I Told You. The song is about queer masculinity and the binaries that hung over my head while I was in high school. I knew I didn't fit in there, at the all-boys school, but I also didn't feel completely seen when I went to most queer spaces with friends – 'I feel like an alien, in every single room I'm in.'" the musician shares
After a string of single releases, Ward found himself on tour with New Zealand indie pop sensation BENEE. After more performances on tour with with local artists Tora and JOY, Ward was named a Triple J Unearthed High finalist in 2019. Not only just a talented musician, Ward is passionate about filmmaking, directing all his own visuals as well as a bi-monthly series on YouTube. His work explores masculinity and identity, and in 2017 Ward took home a win at Tropfest Junior with his short film, Boys Don’t Cry.
