DAYA - THE DIFFERENCE
GRAMMY Award-winning and multi-platinum artist Daya is back with her new EP, The Difference. Arriving with six tracks, including the singles Bad Girl and Montana, the release serves as a time-capsule of the past year, navigating feelings of regret, desire, loneliness, and sadness, playing out across introspective lyricism. Daya shares: “Since it’s my first body of work released since my debut album 5 years ago, I wanted to make sure it captured the versatility in how my sound has evolved and how I’ve grown as a person and writer with it. Songs like ‘Tokyo Drifting,’ ‘First Time,’ and ‘The Difference’ talk about nuances in my relationship and, in ‘Tokyo’s’ case, the various extremities of my mental state while left to my own devices, while ‘Montana’ and ‘Bad Girl’ are more straightforward love songs. Each one feels like an unpolished part of me, digging at the rawest bits of my core, and it’s by far the most vulnerable body of work I’ve released. It feels freeing to finally have it out into the world, I’m so proud and excited to see how it connects.”

The project consists of several songs that vary drastically in style, coming together to showcase every little thing that makes the creation of music so fulfilling to me. Whether a track is something emotional, experimental, or just straight-up fun, each has a special place in my heart. I’m constantly experimenting with different sounds, styles, and influences, so it only makes sense that my debut body of work reflects that. So, when it comes down to it, MUSIC BOX is all about the magic of making music just for the hell of it. I love these songs, and I hope you will, too.”

The release arrives alongside an official visual, directed by Harry Law and inspired by the emotional struggles Proctor experienced growing up in a small town while discovering her sexuality. Speaking of the visual, Proctor shares: “When writing Lost, I instantly pictured the music video. I wanted to create something that I would have wanted to see when I was younger and figuring out my sexuality while growing up in a small town where I didn’t really know anyone else who was gay. I wanted this video to be representative of the LGBTQ+ community and show the emotional connection between two girls who just love being together and get to be free doing so. This is something that is so important to me and I hope that someone in a small town with no one else to relate to, who may be struggling and feeling and alone might see this video and feel a little bit better, less alone, and know that there is an entire community out there that will support them in being who they are and loving who they want freely.”
