Beloved pop icon, Melanie C is taking us further into the world of Sweat with her new single, What Could Possibly Go Wrong?.
From its opening shimmer of synths, the track wastes no time pulling the listener into its rush. Bright, propulsive and knowingly playful, it feels tailor-made for late nights and packed dance floors, where hesitation dissolves into movement.
There is a lightness at the heart of the song, but it is not without depth. Beneath the glossy production sits a lyrical wink at uncertainty, the moment before a leap when instinct overrides doubt. Melanie C explains, “What Could Possibly Go Wrong? is the second single from my upcoming album, written and recorded in Stockholm with the brilliant Klas Åhlund and Nea gives this track that distinctive Swedish sound. We had a lot of fun working on this song and discussing the light and shade of music and life. It's a tongue in cheek look on taking risks and trusting yourself to take that leap anyway. I think a lot of people will relate!”
That Swedish influence is unmistakable. The track is sleek and expertly balanced, marrying euphoric pop hooks with club-ready precision. It builds patiently, letting its energy unfurl rather than explode, rewarding repeat listens with subtle shifts in texture and tone. Like the best dance records, it understands restraint as much as release.
What Could Possibly Go Wrong? also feels deeply rooted in Melanie C’s history with dance music. Long before pop superstardom with the Spice Girls, she was Melanie Chisholm, part of “The F**king Yeah Four”, immersed in the Costa Brava rave scene of the early ’90s. Those formative nights of freedom and rhythm echo here, not as nostalgia, but as muscle memory. This is music made by someone who knows exactly what a dance floor needs.
Her return to DJ culture in recent years has sharpened her instincts as a producer and performer. “I love being able to mix anything I want, you can take things apart and build them again, just like in life.” That philosophy plays out here in the song’s clean construction and confident flow, pop music informed by club sensibility rather than chasing it.
The single fits seamlessly within what we have heard from Sweat, her upcoming ninth studio album, thus far. Recorded between London, Stockholm and LA, the project is set to reflect a renewed sense of clarity and purpose. “I’ve done a lot of soul-searching,” she says. “Now I just want to have some fun and get people dancing again.” That intention is crystal clear on this track, which prioritises feeling over fuss. What Could Possibly Go Wrong? is Melanie C at her most self-assured, trusting her instincts, embracing risk, and inviting everyone else to do the same.
Sweat is out May 1.
