Matt Corby has always had a way of reaching into the soul with his music, and his latest offering, Long and Short, is no exception. The track marks Corby's first new release since his 2023 album Everything’s Fine, and it’s one of his most emotionally direct pieces to date.
Long and Short is an arresting meditation on grief, mortality, and the strange beauty found within sorrow. Co-written with activist, performer and writer Shungudzo, the song emerged from a deeply personal place for Corby, who penned it following the death of a close loved one. Sonically, the song captures everything fans love about Corby: an intimate vocal delivery that feels like a whisper in your ear, carried by a bed of delicate piano and strings that swell into a lush crescendo. Lines like “we count to three and let time show the proof, that we have got so much to lose” don’t just echo in your mind, they sit heavy in the heart.
“Recently someone very close to me passed away from pancreatic cancer and it was very tragic for everyone around me,” Corby shared. “The process of mourning has been long and tough during which you are involuntarily hit with an influx of questions about our mortality and the way we choose to experience this moment we call life. This song is paying homage to the journey one embarks on (hopefully there is one) after they pass away and wishes those on that journey safe passage to their next great adventure. I hope you can take the time to listen and enjoy or cry maybe... it's up to you.”
The release is accompanied by a visualiser filmed by Corby himself using a Super8 camera, offering an intimate look at his life in Rainbow Valley. The grainy, nostalgic footage (featuring moments with his family) further deepens the song’s personal resonance. Long and Short doesn’t just showcase Corby’s musical evolution, it reinforces his rare ability to turn personal loss into something universally meaningful.
Fans won’t have to wait long to see him live again either. Matt Corby is set to join Teddy Swims next month as a special guest on the I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy tour.
Long and Short is out now.
