Multi-platinum artist, Luke Hemmings is back with a new taste of solo music. The 5 Seconds of Summer frontman has unveiled Shakes, alongside the announcement of his highly-anticipated solo EP, boy.
Produced with longtime collaborator Sammy Witte (Maggie Rogers, Harry Styles, Freya Ridings), the synth-led track draws on subdued 80's influences to create a nostalgia-fuelled soundscape bubbling beneath Hemmings' hypnotic vocals. Laced with melancholia and intimately introspective lyricism, the song explores feelings of loneliness and longing for self-acceptance.
“Shakes was written on a dreary NYC evening in between long periods of being on the road. This made it come naturally to write from a melancholy place and feeling of yearning to be back home and feeling lonely and emotionally depleted. There is a longing for love and self-acceptance in the lyrics and I hope it to be a song and feeling that anyone listening can find themselves in and attach their own story.”
Hemmings launched his solo endeavours in 2021 with the release of his debut album, When Facing the Things We Turn Away. Stepping away from the pop-meets-punk sonics of 5SOS, the album moved towards classic rock influences and offered rumination on the decade of his life spent as a working and touring musician. For his forthcoming collection of songs, Hemmings cites LCD Soundsystem and the Cocteau Twins as influences.
