American musician Joshua Bassett is back with the second taste of his soon to released self-titled debut EP, sharing his stellar new song, Only A Matter Of Time. Set to be released in March, Joshua Bassett is the debut body of work from the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star, which will consist of six original tracks.
The piano led track navigates the effect our words and actions can have on one another and how seeking revenge can be detrimental to all involved. Bassett’s vocals shine on the track as he moves between haunting falsetto and powerful modal vocals. There’s a maturity within the twenty year olds vocals and lyricism, creating vivid imagery achieved through the use of anecdotes and commanding statements. On an Instagram live shortly before the release, Bassett shared that the song was written within twenty minutes, with the visual itself also shot within twenty minutes.
Speaking of the release, Bassett shares: "I wrote this song in the summer of 2020 in a moment in time where social media was bringing a lot of darkness to my life. It was healing to put my phone down, turn off the noise and just write. There’s good that comes from social media, but it’s also become a place where people can say anything about anyone, no matter how false or damaging with no accountability. We’ve gotta be much kinder to each other and recognize there are real people behind the screens!"
Only A Matter Of Time is accompanied by a single-shot music video directed by Keenan O’Reilly. The minimalistic clip is a captivating view, creating a moment of intimacy between Bassett and the viewer with a close up of Bassett whilst standing on a train track, before walking out of the frame as the visual comes to an end. Basset is a multi instrumentalist, playing piano, guitar, and drums and also writes and produces his own music. Having performed in musicals since the age of eight, he began his career ad an actor, staring in television programs such as Stuck In The Middle, Grey’s Anatomy and Lethal Weapon before landing a lead role Disney + High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Signing to Warner Records shortly after the shows premiere, Bassett released his debut single Common Sense, in 2020 before beginning to work on his debut EP. Earlier this month, the musician shared the first glimpse of the project with the release of Lie Lie Lie.
