20-year-old singer, songwriter and producer John-Robert has unveiled his new single, Damn Bean. The musician brings his tight left-of-center production to the song, presenting minimal production that create an impact when listening, perfectly soundtracking the themes present lyrically.
The songs visual takes on vivid imagery, with the musician donning a bondage suit to represent the submissive nature of the relationship explored on the track. Like a scene out of American Horror Story's first season, the faceless figure goes looking for love through the streets of suburbia.
Speaking of the visual, the musician shares: “I wrote this music video treatment as a metaphor for my own personal experience. I was led on in a relationship, and was left feeling expendable and less than. I used the bondage suit to display a submissive, and dehumanized character. I then started mustering up the courage to try and meet new people; really putting myself out there. When I wasn’t looking, it hit me. I met someone who was on my same wavelength, someone who I felt genuinely understood me.”
Damn Bean is set to appear on John-Robert’s upcoming EP, Healthy Baby Boy, PT. 1, alongside his previous single USMO. The release will be accompanied by a documentary series, with the first episode released on YouTube today. The series will follow the musician as he returns to his hometown Edinburg, VA which has one stop light and population of 1,000 people. 2020 saw the release of the singers debut EP Bailey Barely Knew Me, which features his breakthrough independent release Adeline. He also teamed up with Grammy-winner Alessia Cara for the duet Fav Boy on Ricky Reed’s album The Room, after reed discovered the musician.
