Fijian rapper Jesswar just released her debut EP TROPIXX. Jesswar currently creates on Yugambeh/Kombumerri land overall captures everything she stands for.
On her debut EP, Jesswar explores traditional notions of power, using her platform to celebrate female power and community. For her track XXL Jesswar collaborates with artists such as House of Slé, choreographer Bhenji Ra and director Natasha Foster. The tracks visual uses the driving beat in the track to bring all the elements together and create a modern visual feast for the eyes, that can be reminiscent of something Beyonce would put together. The movement within the video clip parallels the sound perfectly and creates a memorable collaboration, whilst the use of the colour pink within the grey landscape also creates a tonally poignant message and image.
Speaking of the release, the musician shares: “I made something that was for myself and the phenomenal Black, Brown and Indigenous women in my life. They constantly teach me to stand tall and be as loud as I want and I look up to them.” She continues, “That is why it’s important for me to work with my community because I realised what I’m doing is bigger than just myself. There needs to be room for all of us and If I can share the wins maybe we won't be overlooked.”
Jesswar has also announced she will be celebrating the release of her debut EP with tickets to a THE TROPIXX EXPERIENCE taking place this May. TROPIXX is out now.
