Meanjin-based indie-pop artist Yb. recently unveiled his debut EP, Blackphemy. We caught up with the musician on tour to chat about the release, the intimate and confronting themes explored within his music, performing live and so much more!
Across the body of work, Yb. navigates his own experiences as a coloured man in Australia, documenting the systematic racism of every day life and the need to feel accepted by those around him. Self-empowering and introspective lyricism flow across the songs, brought to life by the musicians captivating and dynamic vocal performance. The release brings together an array of sonic threads, with soundscapes leaning into indie-rock, pop, grunge, folk and psychedelia.
With more than a million streams to his name, Yb. is on his way to becoming one of most exciting acts to come from the sunshine state. Growing up in a musical household, the musician was exposed to a diverse range of genres from indie, rap, gospel to afro beats. He soon developed his own distinct sound, which is at the forefront of his musical project. The musician has supported the likes of Allday, Biig Piig, Golden Vessel and San Cisco on stages across Australia, and recently wrapped up a run of headline shows across the east coast.
