GENESIS OWUSU UNVEILS 'GOLD CHAINS'

Image: Supplied.

As we sit here anxiously waiting for Genesis Owusu long-anticipated album, Smiling With No Teeth, the musician has blessed us with his new single, Gold Chains. The track comes shortly after Owusu announced an extensive run of shows this April and May, embarking on his Smiling With No Teeth Album Tour.

In true Genesis Owusu fashion, the musician brings his phenomenal avant-garde twist on hip-hop, commenting on the misconceptions associated with life in the public eye and the flaws that lie beneath the facade.Co-produced by Ourness founder Andrew Klippel and Dave Hammer and recorded with the Black Dog band, Owusu brings his signature fiery energy, upon textural and dynamic layers.

Speaking of the track, Owsus shares: “Gold Chains was one of the first songs I wrote for the album. It got me thinking about the flaws of being in a profession where, more and more, you have to be the product, rather than just the provider of the product, and public misconceptions about how luxurious that is. Lyrically, it set the tone for the rest of the album.”

Directed by Riley Blakeway, the release is accompanied by a luscious visual, playing on the songs luxurious and rich tones, simulating the spectacle of suffering to break one’s self-commodification. Set within the a haze of monochromatic 70’s fused with stylised 2000’s gold chains, the musician finds himself falling down the rabbit hole of loneliness. "The video is about the hollowness of a lot of the things we hold as idols. The shiny things that get made to look like goals from the outside looking in, but in reality won't be the source of happiness that we'd hoped for. The gold chains become shackles." Owsus shares.

Smiling With No Teeth marks Owusu's full length release since his 2017 debut EP, Cardrive. Throughout his career, he has gained attention from tastemakers worldwide, including Sir Elton John, Triple J, Complex and more, as well as collecting his first ARIA nomination for AA side WUTD and Vultures. After releasing the records lead single Don't Need You, Owusu earned his second ARIA nomination in Best Soul / R&B Release and also marked his Triple J Hottest 100 debut, entering the countdown. at #73.

Smiling With No Teeth is out March 5. Watch the music video for Gold Chains below.
