Driving with Ruby Fields: 5 SONGS TO DRIVE ON YOUR P’S TO

Image: Supplied.

Inner-West brewery Young Henrys will be hosting a a beer-fuelled 3 day mini-festival at the Hotel Steyne from today to Sunday. Set to appear at the festival, Sydney-based musician Ruby Fields has shared with MILKY five songs to play whilst cruising around on your P-plates in celebration of the event kicking off today.

Joining fields on the lineup is beloved Australian artists DMA’S and Pacific Avenue, as well as a bevy of local talent including Crocodylus, Scabz, The Regime and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. All acts will take to the stage for exclusive DJ sets, with the venue also set to host a number of pop-ups and activations.

Volcom Stone will be transforming a level of the iconic Northern Beaches venue with a half-pipe for shredders to showcase their skills alongside Australian Skater of the Year and hometown hero Rob Pace. Outside of the skate park, punters will have the chance to get inked by Thanks Tattoos and Manly natives Whistler Street Tattoo, get their nails done by Volcom’s resident nail artist, attend the Nao Deane film premiere or for those keen on the surf, sit in on a live podcast stream by Ain’t That Swell.

For your chance to witness some of Australia’s most exciting local artists at one of the Northern Beaches most iconic venues, RSVP here to secure your spot at Young Henrys’ weekend-long festivities.

As someone who does a lot of driving, the car is usually a place I can really focus on what I’m listening to and these songs have served me year in year out. I mostly chose songs post 2010s for this to keep it fresh but there’s plenty of classics and naughties I can make a list for some other time.

DON’T BOTHER ME - SCOTT AND CHARLENE’S WEDDING

This song reminds me of so many good times driving around after finally getting my P’s. In a time before officially starting Ruby Fields I used to skip school a lot to tour with other bands and Scott and Charlene’s Wedding were definitely a bit of a soundtrack to that for me.

FUCKIN’ AND ROLLIN’ - PHANTASTIC FERNITURE

This is the best fucking song to roll your windows down to and clear your mind of absolutely anything. Julia Jacklin, say less.

SMALL TOWN PUB - FLOODLIGHTS

Okay so this wasn’t out when I got my P’s but if it had been I would’ve been playing it constantly envisioning my trip around the country with my newfound freedom. Floodlights are incredible, and have very effortlessly captured the landscape in their music.

BOYS IN THE BETTER LAND - FONTAINES D.C.

Again, not a song I was on my P’s to but nevertheless a song that’s been played to gee up the boys and myself before a show or on any road trip. The poetry, the rhythm, all their music’s perfect.

STEER CLEAR - SLAVES

It’s a pretty heavy song, but the verses spoke to me when I was a bit younger and learning more about who I was, then the chorus just comes in and really gets you. I still sing it loud in the car every time it comes on.
