Charlie Sloan’s Crown marks a striking arrival for the Brisbane‑based newcomer. Here, he crafts a tune that feels both rooted in nostalgic rock swagger, whilst remaining sharply in tune with contemporary sensibilities. Drawing from influences like Jet, The Strokes, Powderfinger, and Pacific Avenue, the track bursts with gritty riffs and melodic hooks that command your attention.

What began as a casual jam session over a year ago, evolved into a layered composition exploring emotional tension. As Sloan explains, “Crown started from a jam a year ago. It took a while for me to figure out what the song was really about. It dives into themes of attraction, conflict, and how some people in your life might seem sweet, but aren’t actually good for you.” That sense of push‑and‑pull, between the magnetic and the damaging, anchors the song’s lyrical core.

Sonically, Crown blends the stadium‑sized vocals and punchy guitar tones of ’70s rock with the tense drive and angular edge characteristics of early‑2000s indie-rock. Guitar lines swell from tight, rhythmic bursts into cathartic peaks, giving the recording a raw live band feeling. Sloan’s vocals capture his youthful energy, whilst also presenting himself as a seasoned performer.  His songwriting strikes a balance: introspective enough to speak to emotional complexity, but potent and anthemic enough to retain a youthful tongue-in-cheek presence.

As a first single, Crown makes a confident statement. It announces Charlie Sloan not as a nostalgic echo, but as someone channeling rock’s timeless energy into his own artistic voice. If this is only the beginning, the horizon looks golden.

Crown is out now.
