Sydney-based artist Jo Fabro has shared her new album, Don’t Make A Liar Out Of Me. To celebrate the release, the singer has shared with MILKY five things she learnt whilst working on the body of work.

PATIENCE

This album was recorded all through COVID so I had to learn to wait for the right time to do each and every little section. It’s easy to feel like your music is getting old before it has even been released, but it’s not you have to believe in the quality of your work. I had to learn to use the time that was forced on us to our advantage, I am still trying to learn this.

COLLABORATION

While I wrote these songs, more than any other body of work I have produced, my band has been an integral part of the final sound of the album. Spending so much time in the recording process really freed us up to try different things and to work together to find the right sound. Although you may have an arrangement that works on stage, things change when you get in the studio and it was really nice working with my band to find the right pace for each song.

TO LET GO

When I write songs, I generally have a strong idea of how things should sound in my head, and it’s easy to become defensive when people make suggestions for changes, but working so closely with my producer, and through the demo process, I had to learn to trust the process and be open to trying out new/different things. Sometimes we changed things and sometimes we stuck to my original plan, either way the result was a stronger finished product.

JUST KEEP SWIMMING

This has been such a long process, and like all creative projects we hit lots of snags along the way, in the recording process, in production, in planning launches and releases. I learnt that you just have to keep moving forward, one step at a time, one task at a time, it’s not always perfect, it is often downright messy, but you get there in the end.

TO LOVE MYSELF

I consider myself to be a singer and songwriter, and the downside to that is that sometimes you have to be in photos and videos. We released 3 singles with this album and three video clips, and I just had to let go of self-doubt about what I do or don’t look like or what people will or won’t think about me, and go with the process of making videos, trust my team and the creative process, and end the end I’m happy with how they turned out.
