Multi-award-winning First Nations collective 3% are stepping in to new sonic territory with Betterman, whilst retaining the emotional grit that has defined their ascent. Long celebrated for blending hip-hop, electronic textures and raw storytelling, the collective now turns toward the warmth of country music in what feels like an unexpected yet natural pivot.
Produced by Xavier Dunn, the single leans into open, guitar-driven arrangements and a dusty twang that instantly expands the group’s sonic palette. The shift is less a departure than an evolution: the acoustic framework exposes new vulnerabilities in Dallas and Nooky’s verses, giving their reflections on heartbreak, self-sabotage and inner turmoil a stripped-back honesty. Where previous singles hit with kinetic urgency, Betterman lingers, allowing its emotional weight to settle before lifting into Angus Fields’ soaring, melodic hook. His yearning and resolute chorus line sounds like a plea uttered on the edge of breaking, and breaking through.
“We were raised on country music and Betterman is the first taste of 3% dipping into that sound and it’s definitely not the last,” says Nooky. “Betterman is a song about trying to be better - whether it’s in a relationship, your workplace or just in general. Everybody goes through hard times. Mental health and how we deal with these issues is often a silent battle, there’s a heavy weight and sometimes it can implode. This song is about us being honest with ourselves, acknowledging the imperfections and striving to better ourselves, not just for us but for those around us. Although there may be a lil weight behind the lyrics it’s a fun song, it’s honest and has a certain energy of hopefulness and it’s also a sneak peak at the country bangers we got in the vault.”
That balance of heavy truths delivered with spirit and hope is the song’s real achievement. It captures the push-and-pull of self-improvement: the quiet, private reckoning; the desire to show up better for the people around you; the recognition that even when the mind is cluttered with shadows, there is light to reach toward.
Betterman is out now.
