Melbourne-via-Staghorn Flat artist, Lucky has unveiled her debut EP, Biting Heels. To celebrate the release, she's taking us through the collection of songs track-by-track...

"Although Biting Heels is my debut, it feels like a long time coming," Lucky says of the EP. Finally putting out a body of work that I’ve poured everything into, something that feels truly meaningful, it marks an important moment for me. An official introduction to the world. To me the project feels quite broad, dipping into my different sonic inspirations and directions. I tried to tip my hat to all of them whilst still leaving room for whatever I do next.

To celebrate the release, Lucky will be embarking on a national tour, kicking off in Brisbane on June 12. The run of shows will continue on to Melbourne and Sydney, before wrapping up in Adelaide on June 26. Tickets are on sale now.

ADORED

This song went through the most musical changes and is one of the older tracks on the EP. After playing it live and jamming on it for a while, it naturally evolved into what it is today. It’s about being super aware you’re in a one-sided situation, adoring someone who doesn’t feel the same, yet still choosing to surrender to that reality.

PERFECT PAIN

Perfect Pain has become one of my favourites on the record. Lyrically it’s playful, and almost paints an imaginary scene in the verses, which sets it apart from the other songs on the record. It explores the complexity of being consumed by a crush that may not be right for you. Being so fully immersed that you end up mistaking toxicity for something good.

LADY BEETLE

Lady Beetle was one of the first tracks I wrote with my producer Fletcher Matthews. We were aiming for a fun hook and it’s probably the most playful song on the EP, both sonically and lyrically. It’s been really interesting to watch it become the track that’s probably resonated most with people so far.

HOUSTON

Houston is one of the darker tracks on the record, with lyrics that explore some more unusual and moody imagery. The lead guitar also features a pretty fun tremolo effect that isn’t heard anywhere else on the EP! I loved having this moment, where a guitar line kind of becomes the star of the song.

HIDE N SEEK

This is one of the heavier, rockier, songs on the record. Lyrically, it’s really special to me, it explores reconnecting with the parts of yourself that felt the most pure and at your best, and missing those qualities when they’re not as present as you’d like them to be.

BITING HEELS

This song came about after Fletcher and I were brainstorming a few different song ideas. I initially envisioned it being a sort of ode to my dog back home. We ended up shaping it into a track that’s more universal and open to interpretation. Working on this song reminded me of when I first started writing music, with an acoustic guitar at the core. It quickly became the heart of the EP, centring much of the lyrical content across the record. Exploring comfort zones, the act of pushing beyond them, and trusting that you’ll land somewhere new and exciting.

CLOVER

This song was created shortly after I adopted the stage name “Lucky.” I remember having a fun conversation with my band, and someone suggested I write a track around a lucky theme. It reminded me of a four-leaf clover I found when I was really young (which I still have framed somewhere today), and that became the inspiration for the rest of the song.

TOO TIED

Too Tied has the most unconventional song structure on the record, and I see it as its own moment. We’ve been playing it at the start of our live sets, and I feel as though it really sets the sonic tone for what’s to come. It also features one of my favorite lines from the record: “saving hate for the bills.”

NEVER KNOW

This is probably the oldest song on the EP, which makes it feel quite special. It was the first track I wrote that truly felt at home in the indie-rock world. ‘Never Know’ is about trusting the unknown, staying present in the moment, and facing the fear of being forgotten.
