TRACK-BY-TRACK: BORDERLINE TAKE US THROUGH 'CHRYSALIS'

New Zealand band, Borderline have dropped their new EP, Chrysalis. To celebrate the release, they are taking us through the collection of songs track-by-track.

This September, Borderline will make their way to Australia for performances in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Tickets are on sale now.

BREAKDOWN

Breakdown is definitely one of our favourite songs on the project, it’s super funky and one you can dance to. We wrote this song with Pierre Beasley from Balu Brigada which was so much fun. We wrote the bulk of it in one day, then a few months later we got back in the studio and tidied it up and finished the writing, then we got in the big studio and properly recorded it with our producer Nic Manders who really helped us capture that funky groovy vibe. We’re so proud of it.

HEARTBEAT

Heartbeat was the first song we wrote off the EP and really captures that fun dancey feel we all know and love. We knew when we wrote it that it had something really special. We wrote the song with a good friend of ours Joel Jones (who also produced it), he’s such a great writer and that song came together in a day super quickly.

NEW ROMANCE

New Romance is such a sweet song that we all love so much. We wrote this one in Jackson’s basement studio one day, and it didn’t really evolve from there. We loved the raw emotion we captured and a lot of what we recorded that day stayed in the song. New Romance captures the feeling of falling in love, and how special and euphoric that feels. 

MI AMOR

Mi Amor tells the story of lovers separated by distance and how that romance can be beautiful but the reality of living so far can be challenging. The song is a heap of fun, we wrote and produced this one with Joel Jones too. The verses take on a cool syncopated rhythm through the guitars and bass which makes the chorus really hit hard when it comes around.

WHEN IT'S RAINING

When It’s Raining is huge. It came together really quickly, it was the same day we recorded Heartbeat, we finished the session and were about to get dinner, but then Ben started playing the piano part just messing around, then Jackson jumped on the drums and they played the song front to back. It was one of those moments where you just mess around and really vibe off the other person. That song evokes so much emotion and holds a really special place in our hearts. It’s absolutely the most fun song to play live too - best set closer.
