Watch our interview with Taj Ralph!
Sydney singer-songwriter Taj Ralph has unveiled the final offering from his forthcoming EP, with the release of his new single Something From Nothing. The honest and vulnerable track will join the musicians previously released singles Walls 2 Break and Driftin’ on his debut EP, Walls 2 Break, due out this August.
Written in Melbourne with producer Jim Alxdr (Carly Rae Jepson, Woodes, Angie McMahon), Something From Nothing sees Ralph contemplates the hardships that come with chasing your dreams, wondering whether or not he's doing enough. Continuing his genre-defying exploration of sound, the R&B led track is championed by Ralph's smooth and evocative vocals, floating above retro-tinged chords and rhythmic jazzy percussion.
“I was experiencing writer's block and struggling to make anything of substance. 'Something From Nothing' came from overcoming that through a shift in perspective” Ralph says of the track. “This was one of those songs that seemed to write itself, smoothly and effortlessly, despite the previous writer's block, I think I had something I needed to get off my chest in the process. Lyrically ‘Something From Nothing’ is one of the most cohesive and stronger songs that I’ve written, with a clear motive‘.
Having released music since he was 16, Ralph has been working on a collection of songs, building up the the release of his debut EP. Launching onto the scene with his debut single Beat The Keeper, the musician captured the attention of the triple j Unearthed team, who chose Ralph as a finalist for Unearthed High in 2017. Having released a string of singles since, Ralph has been added to rotation on the station, and also embarked on a number of headline performances, as well as partnering with Niche Productions as his touring agent.
