Perth-based artist Siobhan Cotchin recently shared her new single, Growing Pains. To celebrate the release, the singer is taking MILKY behind the scenes of her time in the studio working on the track.
“Growing Pains is a super personal song about the realities of growing up. It’s about wanting to avoid all responsibilities of adulthood and the anxieties I think we’ve all faced at some point about who we are and where we fit in the world. It’s kind of an ode to my anxiety and the way it makes me act by ‘ghosting my friends’ and just generally avoiding people. I hope with Growing Pains, people can find solace and comfort in the lyrics and know it’s completely okay to be scared of the future and not know who you are. It’s all part of being human!” Cotchin shares of the track.
“It was so incredible to work with Sam Ford at Tone City. I feel like I’m starting fresh and exploring aspects of my music I haven’t had the chance to yet. I always have the best time in the studio with my band, it was a super easy process and all just naturally flowed.”
Recording vocals, for me, is probably the most stressful part of the recording process. I’m a real perfectionist and absolutely despise making mistakes! But this time around, I felt like I knew what I was doing and put less pressure on myself to be perfect. I think that’s what the song is about too, being okay with the fact that nothing you do will ever be 100% perfect. I felt like I really let go and just had fun with recording the vocals.
Between takes, you could find the band and I drinking coffee and playing Mariokart. It’s so important to let yourself have breaks when in the studio and step out of that hypercritical head space, and Tone City certainly has the space to do so! I think my Mariokart skills have improved immensely....
I’ve written nearly all my songs on the guitar, so it’s an integral part of the recording process. I always have so much fun playing this song live and it was awesome to see it come alive in the studio too!
I absolutely adore my band. They help my songs come to life and they are just so talented at everything they do!
They just make the recording process 10 X easier and so entertaining, i’m so lucky to have them and get to make music with them.
This is the sweet angel known as Brownie/ Mr Brown. He definitely kept the studio morale up and was great company when we were listening back to the track! I think he likes the song too....
