NOVEMBER BOOK CLUB: SOFIE LAGUNA'S 'THE UNDERWORLD'

Our November Book Club pick is Sofie Laguna’s Night People.

Set against the landscape of Australia Laguna weaves together a transportive tale. A coming of age story that is supported by a Roman mythology aspect. 

From the start you can somewhat relate to the main character Martha, in the sense that you learn things throughout life whether it be at school or at home or with others that can at times link to what you are going through, finding similarities. Having once been a history student myself I can find similarities in this. It was wonderful to experience this within an Australian text. 

The author explores many key themes within the scope of family and friends, delving into the relationships within both of these and exploring identity, friendships and sexuality. There’s an element of found family, which has recently become one of my favourite tropes. You get quite drawn in by the prose. I find Australian authors have a true gift, or perhaps a natural ability in encapsulating the essence of the narrative they’re exploring. Something that draws you in as a reader, which was present in this text.  

It’s a novel that belongs within this landscape, particularly when it comes to being a woman who challenges societal norms and someone who has a desire to be independent. From the 70’s to now, there are elements that are still so relevant today. I almost feel like it can encapsulate the idea that through history we learn. Another great addition was the exploration of the emergence of women’s rights. 

This book drew you in from the start, you encountered characters with heart and complexities that had you rooting for their happy moments. You’ll find yourself wanting to read more from Laguna, and I definitely will!
