There’s nothing better than an Australian story. Framed by the language of flowers, Holly Ringland's The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart explores the story of a young girl who has had a violent childhood - where in amongst the darkness, light is found through the language of flowers. These elements are threaded throughout two decades of protagonist Alice Hart’s life, and we as readers are transported to varying captivating/enchanting landscapes across Australia. Where the overarching theme of nature and flowers are a constant in both the physical state, whilst linking to our emotional state in what they represent.

It’s a confronting story, with a focus on domestic violence and the impact it has throughout life. It was poignant and beautiful in its exploration of sacrifice and courage in overcoming trials faced, as you discover who you are and where you stand in the world.

There’s nothing better than purchasing a book with the intent to read it, and then getting a recommendation from someone to read said book (this particular person having also witnessed themes present in the book in their own life), whilst they spend a portion of time at a dinner party delving passionately into just how beautifully executed the novel is. This, and the fact it is a five star read is why it is our book club choice for March.

"If there's an unanswered call in your heart, please know you are brave enough to face it. To hear it. To answer it. It's never too late to follow the trail of crumbs towards our wildest dreams. First one step. Then another. Step by step by step. Word by word by word." Holly Ringwald.

Holly Ringland's The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart is available now via Harper Collins Australia.
