Inspired by her Vietnamese heritage and her heroes from the 60s and 70s, nineteen year old Lucy Sugerman has made her debut with her bedroom pop bop, i wanna kiss boys cos i'm bored.
The singer brings her knack for confessional pop lyricism and catchy reliable topics to the release, which navigates the singers struggles and triumphs in romance and growing up. Co-written and produced with Hauskey and MUKI, i wanna kiss boys cos i'm bored ultimately captures the humour and spirit of learning from her own experiences, above a retro lo-fi soundscape.
Speaking of the track, Sugarcane shares: “As we all tend to do at some point or another, I went through a long period of seeing other people solely to try and get over an ex. It’s safe to say, it didn’t help and left me feeling quite hollow afterwards every time. It’s something I experienced on both sides, a worrying amount of times - I’d be telling someone I don’t want anything serious, and they’d say the same, and then for some twisted reason, we’d end up talking about our exes. Feelings are weird.”
The release is accompanied by a compelling visual which sees the singer invite all of her exes to a ‘coffee date’, that is a little more like a relationship interrogation. The format comments on modern dating stereotypes, simultaneously poking fun at her own experiences with love. Sugerman directed the music video herself, alongside editor and DOP Chris Walsh.
