UK born / Melbourne based songwriter, Laurie Cave recently unveiled his new single, Nobody Could Ever Love You. To celebrate the release, the musician has shared with MILKY five anti-love songs.
“This release is about doing ‘the work’ and facing up to the demons of early childhood and a ‘mis-spent youth’ of drug use and avoidance. It’s about the moment when you finally accept that you have to go to the deep and dark places to work through your trauma," Cave shares. “This song is heavily inspired by ‘Seventeen Going Under’ by Sam Fender - a song that completely transfixed me. It felt like Sam was making the music and expressing the things that I have always wanted to. In some ways, it is a homage to his song”.
I CAN’T MAKE YOU LOVE ME - BONNIE RAIT
I think this is one of the saddest songs about unrequited love. In that sense it’s an anti-love song. Loving someone who won’t love you back. Breaks my heart every time.
FISTFUL OF LOVE - ANTHONY AND THE JOHNSONS
Someone once told me this is about his relationship with his abusive father. Again, it’s anti-love in that it confronts the dark side of love. In this case physical domestic abuse. The lyrics are so heartbreakingly beautiful and so incredibly sad.
COMPLICATED - AVRIL LAVIGNE
This is one of my all time favourites. Know every word and will until I die. If I’m doing karaoke on my deathbed - this is the song. Avril nails the anti-love sentiment of calling someone out for being a try hard and a pretender.
MY FRIENDS OVER YOU - NEW FOUND GLORY
Really leaning into my Pop Punk tendencies here (I literally grew up on the stuff!)... This was a seminal tune for me. Drinking beers in my best mate’s Ford Fiesta in the Sainsbury’s (Coles) car park head banging and getting questioned by the police. It’s all about putting your friends first over love (not that we had much hope of that at the time!).
YOU GOT A FRIEND IN ME - RANDY NEWMAN
Bit of a wildcard here. This is anti-romantic-love. This is about friend love. This song gets me every time. It doesn’t matter what mood I’m in - Randy Newman knows how to make me feel good and remind me that everything’s gonna be ok
