Australian artist, actor, writer, provocateur and musician, Kirin J Callinan has treated us with the release of his new single, Crazier Idea. To celebrate the release, the musician has shared with MILKY his five craziest ideas.
Speaking of the track, Callinan shares: "When the spirit comes to play, the game she plays is real, for those of us who fly… we fly into the sun, we’re chasing after one Crazier Idea' begins Crazier Idea, clueing us in to the inspired, playful three & a half minute, possibly crazy idea that’s about to transpire. If there was truly any doubt whether I could indeed sing, as the album title suggests, it is surely dispelled here.
Mixed & mastered in a deadline day fluster in the studio it was written (credited as 'Greasy Studios', deep within the suburban sprawl o northern Paris) in order to make the album’s final cut, to be pressed to plastic and streamed to the masses as soon as humanely possible; Crazier Idea had a far more impulsive, providential, auspicious, serendipitous, chance & curious conception. Co-writer Max Baby first inquisitively & quite innocently played me a strange sample of a sound he had created several years earlier, a sound that would now ultimately & finally become the musical core of Crazier Idea ~ the alien stabs & orchestral hits that continue throughout ~ to which Max was immediately met with ecstatic & hurried jubilation from me, who’s words & melody soon freely flowed, written & demo’d in 5 minutes flat, before some reverse engineering of Crazier Idea's semi-abstract, inspired & almost jazz-fusion chordal arrangement would come to provide the song its instrumental spinal column. Testament to our musical ambition, Crazier Idea is seemingly just the beginning, a sign of songs to come."
Crazier Idea serves as the second taste of the musicians forthcoming album, If I Could Sing, following the release of ETERNALLY HATEFUL. The record is set to arrive on February 2, 2024.
BEING WILLFULLY TORCHED & TORTURED, STRUNG UP, STRUNG OUT, STRETCHED, DROWNED & BURNED ALIVE IN A CASTLE IN EUROPE (AND FOOTING THE BILL!).
Whilst mostly good clean fun, the high / low point came when, on the very first day o shooting the video for Eternally Hateful, and on just our second set-up of the shoot; a frail, elderly French woman whom I never saw smile, spoke with a scowl & not a lick o English, approached and went absolutely ballistic at me & everyone else, who for the most part could not understand a word she was saying either. All whilst I was being pulled by ropes & chains, limb from limb, in all four directions, mostly nude, my kilt caught in a gail, & in very real physical pain. She was the owner of the 700 year old castle “Chatéau de Sarzay”, and she wanted more money than originally agreed.. Once we understood, my mother kindly retrieved my wallet and accepted her demands. My hands were tied.

Moved in with a former Socceroo, a hero of mine who I’d signed to, and had captained, my all concurring Sydney FC team in my Football Manager save years ago. We moved into a little beachfront apartment in North Bondi during covid, paying a fraction in rent of what we would otherwise be paying today. That’s where the honeymoon ended. Had recurring nightmares he was trying to kill me. Saged the house. But it all sorta went south from there…

GOING SOLO.
Going solo is definitely one of the crazier ideas I’ve ever had. Something usually reserved for more established artists, eventually breaking free & stepping out into the spotlight, with the wind in their wig, n goin’ it ‘lone. I been goin’ it ‘lone with the wind in my wig for the vast majority o my adult life. Sure I’ve had some bandmates, collaborators, managers, labels, partners, fans, friends et al etc … but when it’s your name, your face, your vision, your life… it’s also your funeral, your trial.
